X is the number that you are solving for. X is a symbol for an unknown. If the teacher had put a number in the equation, it wouldn't be unknown - hence, the reason for the unknown is to make you calculate the answer to find a number for X that will make the equation work.
2 (x-4) = 4
2x-8 = 4
2x = 12
x = 6
Put that back into the original equation, and see if the equation works:
2 (x-4) =4
2 (6-4) =4
2 (2) = 4
4 = 4 (the problem checks out and X has been found)

the x is what you figure out.
its unknown.
called a variable.
to solve this equation:
1)distribute 2 to x-4 so that
2x-8=4
2)get like variables on each side
add 8 to 4 so that
2x=12
3)divide 12 by 2 so that
x=6
answer is x=6

Once again "x" is just a variable. to answer the question you need to distribute the two. so the problem would read 2x-8=4. You would then add the 8 to both sides leaving you with 2x = 12. then you would divide both sides by two to find the answer. and the answer is x = 6

Like was said, the x is a variable. That means it stands for any number. However, to make this particular equation true, it can't just be any number, it has to be 6, or something = to 6. X could also = (3 + 3) and this equation would still be true.

x just means any variable number, in this case x represents the # needed to solve, fulfil the equation.
2(x-4)=4
get rid of parethesis
2x - 8 = 4
get 2x on it's own side by moving 8 over to the other side. You add 8 to 4 to cancel out the negative sign.
2x = 12
to get X by itself, divide both sides by 2
x = 6
there you go.

2(x-4)=4
--
Times x and 4 by 2 so you have 2x-8=4
--
Add 8 to both sides so you have; 2x=12
--
Divide each side by 2 so you have; x=6
