The date December 21st, 2012 A.D. (13.0.0.0.0 in the Long Count), represents an extremely close conjunction of the
Winter Solstice Sun with the crossing point of the Galactic Equator (Equator of the Milky Way) and the Ecliptic
(path of the Sun), what that ancient Maya recognized as the Sacred Tree. This is an event that has been coming to
resonance very slowly over thousands and thousands of years. It will come to resolution at exactly 11:11 am GMT.
There will be storms.

The Earth is not going to pass through the center of the galaxy. The Sun orbits the center of the galaxy in such a location and at such a distance that we are and will stay between the spiral arms of the Milky Way. This is a very good thing, because the stars in the galactic core and in the spiral arms are much closer together than they are between the arms.
Being close to lots of other stars is potentially bad for the preservation of complex life (like us). If another star passes too close to us, it could disrupt planetary orbits in the Solar System. Even if that didn't happen, the star's gravity could knock a bunch of cometary nuclei out of the Oort cloud and into the inner Solar System. Impact with one of them would also be bad news. A second type of threat involves super novas--which you don't want to be too close too. The radiation from them could destroy our atmosphere's ability to block harmful rays from the Sun--with obviously negative implications for life here (or any planet with life, especially the complex variety).
As an aside, for planets to develop complex life (at least, any sort we can currently foresee), they have to have stable orbits for long periods of time and avoid too many asteroidal impacts and being irradiated. Thus, it is unlikely that planets with complex life (and thus intelligent life, which must be much more complex than bacteria) will be found in the spiral arms or the galactic core. Those star systems that are sometimes in the arms and sometimes between them are also less likely to have intelligent life.

If you mean when will Earth pass THROUGH the galactic center of the Milky Way, it won't happen. The solar system, including Earth, orbit around the galactic center.

he Perseus Spiral Arm is a major spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy.
The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy with four major arms and and least two minor arms or spurs. The Perseus Spiral Arm, with a radius of approximately 10,700 parsecs, is located between the Cygnus Arm and the Sagittarius Arm. It is named after its proximity to the constellation Perseus.
There is speculation that the minor Orion Arm, which includes the solar system and Earth, is a branch of the Perseus Arm, but this is unconfirmed.
The Perseus Spiral arm contains a number of Messier objects:
Therefore, the earth, and the solar system, will not pass the galactic center of the milky way. They are in the rim of Orion Arm.

December of 2012 has come about only because the Mayans ran out of stone to keep tabulations. Nothing will happen, we will continue on our wondrous journey through the cosmos, oblivious to the galactic center of the milky way...

the earth and the entire solar system sits in an outer arm of the milkyway which rotates around the galaxy-center once every 225 to 250 million years.
this is assumed to continue forever, if not the andromeda galaxy would be heading towards the milkyway which is believed to crash into our galaxy in about 3 billion years or so.
so IF the earth EVER pass the galaxy center i'm sure it's no earlier than in 3 billion years.

asserting Earth aligns with the Milky way is nonsense. Our photograph voltaic gadget is often component of the Milky way a techniques from the middle and in orbit around the sting of it. It in no way aligns extra at one time than yet another. have you ever forgotten the nonsense approximately Y2K? How quickly we forget approximately! Why do some human beings love stupid Doomsday nonsense? you will hit upon plenty nonsense of many varieties on the internet or someplace else.
