In most communities there should be a service called a distress centre or a suicide prevention line. They are usually listed in the front of your phone book. You can look this up, and better yet, give this number to your friend. Being a caring and supportive friend can definitely help someone who is going through a rough time - just know that you are not personally responsible for their recovery. Be there for them as much as you can (without burning out yourself), and try to get them to go to a counselor or a doctor. A suicide prevention line or a community information line like 211 (if you are in most parts of North America) should be able to recommend some non-profit counseling agencies. If you think that they are right about to do something, you should call 911 or the emergency number in your area. I hope this helps! Your friend is lucky to have a caring friend like you.
