have a septic tank - don't know what to use in the tank of toilet to stop this build up of brown residue - is their anything to dissolve this residue and won't harm septic tank? i use a weekly cleaner for bowl but that doesn't help, of course, with the brown residue in the tank. any suggestions? thanks for your help.

two things come to mind. 1 tank tablets, worst thing they ever came out with, they can do more damage than good. when they get to small they can dislodge from tank and jam water holes that make toilet flush, seen this time and time again, cheaper to change toilet than clean out. best suggestion i see is 2 , install filter to cure this problem, and use a liquid tank cleaner. such as the new kaboom tank and bowl cleaner. easy to hookup and safe to use.

Well, I see several folks have stated you may have iron in your water. Another possibility is lime. (Our well was pumping so much lime, you could actually get little mounds of dirt and sand if you left the garden hose running in one spot... a new, deeper well solved the problem for us)

Quick test to see which it is, iron or lime.... turn the water off, and let the bowl drain down a bit... then try a little naval jelly on the brown stain. If it's iron, itll take off really fast. Lime-Away, or CLR, are a couple of products you can try, if you have a lime problem. Be sure you have good ventilation tho. (same goes for those bleach suggestions earlier)

No matter what chemicals you end up using to help keep your bowl/tank clean.... you should be using Rid-X, each month, to keep your septic tank working properly. It's only about $6 / box.. and that will treat up to a 1500 gallon septic tank, if I remember correctly. It can save you a LOT of money down the road, and the septic system will work more efficiently.

Good Luck!

I've been using 2000 flushes tabs in my tank and though I don't see much improvement yet in the tank I don't get that constant brown residue in the bowl. I'm hoping with continued use the tank will clear out some too.

The pumice stone used with plenty of water to avoid permanent scratches is the only way I know of. If that's not working either, you might have to just replace the toilet. It's not hard to do with some basic tools and a pair of strong arms. You can buy a toilet fairly cheap these days. Sorry the pumice didn't work. It must be in really bad shape.

Brush often and clean with any Eco friendly household cleaner. Toilet manufacturers do not recommend bleach, or tank tablets, or heavy chemicals, but many people use them anyway disregarding the damage caused to china and to our environment especially to the drinking water supply. Thank you for asking such important question.

Are you on a well? Sounds like the stain is from iron in the water, can you put a filter in line out side the home, like a charcoal filter?

Put a couple cups of bleach in the tank. If you don't do it too often, it shouldn't harm your septic tank.
