My husband wants a real tree this year, and I've never had one. I'm nervous about the tree catching fire because of the lights, and I'd rather just not put lights on it. I've never seen a Christmas tree without lights (or I haven't paid attention). Does anyone have a tree without lights? How does it look?

I don't know that I've ever seen a tree without lights, but I'm certain it could be done.

Here's some tips for taking care of your natural tree, though, to keep it fresh through the holiday season:

(1) If there's anything close to you, go and select and cut your own tree from a tree farm. This is much fresher than those that you can buy in front of a store or on a lot, which have been sitting out for a while. Plus, it's an enjoyable trip with the family.

(2) Shake the tree down to remove any dead needles before bringing it into your home.

(3) Use one of the stands specially created for live trees, it has a reservoir to water the tree.

(4) Before placing your tree in the stand, cut approximately 1 inch off the bottom of the tree (even if you've cut it fresh and brought it home). From that point, cut notches into the bark about 1/4 inch from the bottom. This will give the tree a chance to drink.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday season. Nothing creates that Christmasy smell in the home like a live tree!

I would use clear lights - when I grew up we had real candles on the real Christmas tree. People went into the forest and cut the best tree they could find. The tree cutting was done in the morning of Christmas eve.. They had little snap-on candle holders. I don't know why I never heard of trees or houses burning. We had two white candles burning on every window sills. We always had a white Christmas back then, now it may not snow until January. Tree ornaments were made of paper cutouts and straw figures formed with red yarn. Lights out, the fresh fragrant tree with the candles burning, the straw sheep and angels in a golden glow, everyone singing Christmas carols - oh well - nothing was ever again as spell binding as that was for a 5 year old. The clear lights remind me of those times long ago. I have them on the house outside. Everything is just too plastic today so I don't decorate much for Christmas inside. Just a bunch of candles and fresh poinsettia everywhere. No Christmas tree.

I can honestly say I have NEVER had a tree without lights it would look so plain without the flashing colors! I would worry too though because it might burn, it probably won't though just only have the tree on when YOU are home, that way you can watch it and still have the lights. I guess if nessasry you could put lots of tinfoil on and beads to go around. If you got more decorations too it would probably not look so bare. Like those trees at the stores they are usually not lite but they have so many things that you do not notice
Hope I Helped=)

Yes, I had a tree one time without lights. I couldn't afford any at the time. However, if you are afraid of the tree catching fire, you can always turn the lights off when you aren't in the room. I'd say go for it, just don't leave the lights on all the time.

I love real trees! That's awsome your getting one! The only way your tree will catch fire is if you never water the tree. If the tree is really dried out, it WILL catch fire. If you still aren't sure about your tree, go to your local tree farm where you can purchase christmas trees and ask an employee about the lights. Good luck. Merry Christmas!

Neither, I have neither, but if you have a real tree water it a little (even if it has no roots) keep it as fresh as you can, the Christmas tree lights should not reach a temperature that causes spontaneous combustion if they do -sue. If those lights were bought for the purpose and there is no information that says NOT FOR USE ON REAL FIR TREES light your tree with fairy lights but don't have them on for all day, use your loaf.

we've had a real christmas tree with lights for several years. Its not as hazardous as you think. I think a Christmas Tree without the lights wouldn't look to great. especially when its dark.

Trees are only a fire hazard if you let them dry out. The lights are safe.
