Colin is trapped in his room and is never allowed to do anything, because every one says he's ill, although he really isn't. Colin's father doesn't want nearly anything to do with his son or the house, so he goes away on trips all the time, and never spends any time with his son. And then there's the garden, which the children want to go into, but can't, because Colin's father doesn't want the garden to be remembered as it reminds him of his dead wife.

Colin's father is always away, too afraid to even look upon his surviving child, a constant reminder of his wife's death.

Then there's the garden... once the property of Colin's mother, the lady of the creepy manor. It has fallen into disrepair after she died there.
