One of the doors in the bedroom got broken, long story.... I am trying to figure out how much something like this would be taken from the security deposit once I move out which I will be doing very soon.

You`re probably looking at $250 to $350 depending on where you are and who does the work.

It all depends on the door. If it's a hollow panel door, not too much. If it's a raised panel, or solid core, out of good wood, then much more.

If it's a simple hollow core door, why not replace it yourself? Some places like home depot will cut it to size for you, and all you would need to do is attach the hinges and the lock mechanism. If you've got a friend who has done this before, it's a good chance to learn and a skill that could come in handy some other time. It's a real good beginners project if you have an experienced handi-person avaliable.

Look at the other doors, get a measurement off the existing door, look at the hinging on the door.. You could purchase a prehung replacement if you have any sort of skills you could replace it yourself.

As a former landlord, I had a stipulation in my contracts that if the tenant makes any material changes to the property without my approval they will forfeit the deposit.

You may want to revisit your lease first and be honest with your landlord about what happened instead of being a sneak about it.

Tell him you want to make it good. If it means buying the door and putting it in on your dime before you term the lease then so be it. But don't be underhanded. Ask him if he has paint to match.. Unless you've created a situation with some bad blood between you treat your landlord as you would wise to be treated..

Pretty cheap. Go to Home Depot and get a hollow core door that is primered. About $50 I think, if memory serves correct.
