Most have instructions for lighting. First, you need to shut off the valve for a couple of minutes. Then, turn it to light and press the valve in. Light the pilot while keeping the valve pushed in. After about thirty seconds or so, turn it to the on position. It should still be lit.
Most instructions are something like that, but look on the valve assembly to make sure.

Since I don't know how much you know about a hot water heater I'll try to be simple. the pilot flame not only provides for ignition for the main heater ,it also heats a thermo-coupler that lets the gas to keep flowing to the main heater and pilot light. When lighting there should be a small button near by and you have to hold it in for a while(maybe a minute, check your manual). If this doesn't work you probably have a bad thermo-coupler which is a common problem.

Change the thermocouple. You will need to go back to where you purchased it and get the right one. Whirlpool tanks have left handed threads. Be sure and read the directions with the new one and check everything it tells you to check.
