Ipod tips and help....buying a used one?

I am searching for an Ipod to trade for my psp (NOY ON THIS FORUM) and 2 people have answered ad on CL . 1 is brand new in box and the other says his is in great condition and comes with Protective screen and WALL CHGR. never having even TOUCHED an Ipod, are those items usally included in a new one and are there any good ways an Ipod rookie could test or ask questions about either unit- my fears are getting abroken used unit or a 'brick in the box' scam
