If you're interested in buying a house then use a real estate broker. It doesnt cost you a dime and you will get the help of the multiple listings. If you are just looking for listings and are not yet ready to buy, use realtor.com if it is a listing (these listings may be a bit old but in this slow housing market it will work) or use zillo.com to search any address (for instance if you are looking to sell your own home. These values are not the best estimates, but they work). Good luck.

In my opinion, the best way is to contact a real estate agent. They have access to the MLS, they're familiar with the area, and they can really help you through the process. Of course, there are also newspaper ads, the "free" listing books that are usually outside the grocery stores, and the online listings for your local real estate companies. Good luck finding what you're looking for!
