The letters in the front of the name stand for the class of car and the number represents the engine displacement. Letters after the numbers represent extra car info, like L for long wheelbase, or CDI for Diesel. The engine displacement is easy, but the letters are very confusing!
For example, an S500 and an S600 are the same model car (class S) but the engine is 1 liter bigger (5.0 liters vs. 6.0 liters).
The S is the large sedan, the SL is the large coupe. Same thing with the C and CL... L stands for coupe.
A CL550 is a big coupe, but a CL550L would theoretically be a long-wheelbase (stretched) CL550.
Same goes for the E230, E320, etc...
Car classes go from small (A, like the tiny A190) to large (S, like the huge S550). If you look at Mercedes' cars, you notice the smallest cars start with the A and the biggest have the S.
Of course, Mercedes makes this more confusing by overlapping all the letters and the fact that it changed its naming style in 1994.
Sedans come in three classes: C, E, and S (smallest to largest)
Convertibles come in three classes: CLK, SLK, and SL (I think K stands for compact)
Coupes come in four classes: CLK, CLS, CL, and SLR
Trucks come in M, R, and GL - GL actually doesn't fit as its a holdover from when the truck was called a Glendelwagen.
4Matic is all wheel drive. Kompressor is a supercharger on the engine.
AMG is a special tuning house that makes high-powered versions of the normal cars. An S65 AMG is a high powered S600 sedan.
Hope this helps!

Depends on where you live if you are near the sea the E class tend to rust badly check under the rubbers at the top of all doors including the hatch or boot also check where it was made (plate on the pillar of the drivers door) if it says south africa run for your life . The E class is a better car of course the C class history tells you that it was built to rival early Fords so spares were priced to match hope this helps.

They used to mean something....
S for saloon
E for executive
C for compact
Of course, they use German equivalant of those words. Today, they are just name for a particular model of their vehicle. It represents the body style and the chasis. Also, the number that follows, such as 230, 260, 300, etc used to represent engine size. This is no longer true either.
