Anime was greatly influenced by Disney.
Disney gave his characters and instructed his artists to give their characters un-characteristically large eyes. This is because many emotions can be expressed merely with the eyes alone.
The anime artists adopted this technique. Particularly the one that started it all,... Osamu Tezuka, the creator or Astro Boy. :-)
Everything that's come since then has simply copied a winning technique that gives their characters expressive emotion via the eyes. That is why they are the most prominant feature on most anime characters

Large eyes is not distictive of anime. If you look at Bugs Bunny, and Mickey, they have large eyes too. It is the Western animation that inspired Japanese Osamu Tezuka ("Father of anime") to animate. That is one reason why alot of anime characters have large eyes. It all traced back to Disney and the Warner Brothers.
It is Chinese philosophy that the "eyes are the window to the soul", so therefore they might also feel that larger eyes would be more expressive. Of course, it all depends on the artist, just as some Western cartoonest really exagerate (i.e. Snoopy), while others prefer more realistic depiction (i.e. Superhero comics).
It's not a rule to draw anime with big eyes, some artists think it's cute, others like a more realistic approach.
Here's some examples of drawing styles: http://www.sailorenergy.net/HowToDraw/HOWTODiagramRealAnime.html

It's just the art style. It's generally used to portray innocence or beauty, though. It's become the trademark of anime nowadays, especially among non-fans. Too many people complain about the eyes being too big, it's rather annoying. -shrugs- That's just how it is. Although, some people say it's because Asians have small eyes, so they make their drawings have big eyes. Who knows? Go ask a mangaka if you're really curious.
(Mangaka is manga artist)

Can't really say, it depents upon the person drawing the characters. It's different, American-Anime is more dramatized and too human like, whereas Japanese-Anime, the characters have huge eyes, or colorful hair. American-Amine has plots beneath plots beneath plots, whereas Japanese-Anime is straight and to the point with sci-fi settings. It all depends.

I'm actually a huge anime fan. Their eyes are big because they show your emotions and the children/teens have larger eyes. The adults have slightly smaller eyes and most villains have smaller eyes.

Since you're not an anime fan you're not privy to the fact that not all anime characters have big round eyes.
The ones that do are created to emit a sense of youth and/or innocence.

girl, u just ticked off so many anime fans with that comment about the big eyes. but seeing as how im a nice person i will let it pass.
The eyes are unusually large and round so as to show emotions.
Facial expressions are a great part of the whole anime expression.

You see, anime is the style of art. The eyes are just simply characterisics of that style of art. It may be because eyes are the window to your soul, so they are made to be super expressive.

i read somewhere that since anime characters cry in waterfall like style they probably have large tear ducts to produce that much tears and since you cant have small eyes and large tear ducts they drew the characters with larger eyes to balance it
