A janitor is primarily a person who cleans. A custodian deals also with maintenance of machinery and building systems, like HVAC and plumbing.

Remember the old joke about calling a janitor a "Custodian". Well, how about calling a phone screen "Candidate Development"? I don't think the new name brought the janitor any more money but I think fancy talk does make recruiters more money...

PhD. degree a custodian in a museum has, for example, since no janitor would be allowed to clean Mona Lisa's painting, or maintain the rare manuscripts.
In the industry the custodian jobs include: general building maintenance, janitorial duties, and floor maintenance, sometimes grounds maintenance as well. Janitorial usually refers to cleaning only.

probably only a job title.
but sometimes a janitor is person who cleans up.
the custodian actually has responsibility for the space.
they will have keys to all the rooms and have more
responsibility for the space.
