I haven't used the iMac in a couple of years. Loads of problems that I'm starting to fix now. I had just let it go. First things first though, I need to run First Aid. According to the help menu, if the "verify" and/or "repair" buttons are grayed out, it's because it's locked and needs admin. info. But it's not locked, and I did try entering my info anyway. Lock isn't the problem. Any ideas of why I can't get First Aid to run? Thanks!

To JohnDeere - if you're still around - what would that code do to fix the problem then? Thanks for your response.

restart holding the apple+S key. It will boot to a prompt. enter this line of script. /sbin/fsck -fy. There is a space between the k and the hyphen. when repaired type exit.

Most commonly this is because you do not have the Hard drive selected on the right hand side menu. It is not the name that you need to select but the size of the hard drive listed either above or below it. If you select this instead... the option to verify disk should become black.

If you do restart and hold down S and Apple then... type only
fsck -f (space between k and -) then enter. It will either say......HD appears to be okay......or.......File system was modified. If it was modified run it again. If it does not repair you will need to erase and reinstall. If it does repair you can type reboot to start back to the dektop.

Hope that help you. :)
