In America we used to build a big porch on the front of the house. Then in the 60s we switched to a big patio in the back yard. For a while after that the 'living room' was the social gathering spot. Now it's a darkened interior room containing a small glowing screen and we type to each other.
The neighbors are still there, but we no longer know who they are.

I've just finished a 17 hour day, before I have to get up at 04:50 tomorrow for another, my neighbour will wake me at least 10 times. The fact I've stuffed as many earplugs in my ears that will fit and am sleeping in the bedroom furthest from the party wall won't make any difference, the noise is amplified, lasting a second or less and jars me awake every time. So don't lament missing neighbours just thank the stars above that you don't have mine!!

It depends where you live, Albert Square and Coronation Street all have very friendly neighbours and of course Neighbours also. Personally I'm happy just to see my neighbours once a year because I am an unsociable git!

I see my neighbours quite often, and I'm a mum, and I work outside the home. My husband works from home 2 days a week, and we share responsibility for the kids.
My mum stayed at home until we were grown up and was depressed and miserable.

They are very busy getting on with their own lives, but they are around. Unfortunately we Will never have the community spirit that we had in the past as we talk of team spirit now. Neighbors are not necessarily the person you meet on the street every day if you addressed a stranger as neighbor today they'd probably tell you to *** off!

Well, I'm not sure if it's that, or that good fences make good neighbors.
People on the whole are just jerks when provoked. It's better to think there is a den full of sleeping lions than tread to loudly and remove all doubt!

A couple of years ago there was a murder across the street. ( A $300.000 neighbor hood by the way.)and I had to live through several media blitzes. I have since moved and bought several acres of land and I'm glad to say I have solved the neighbor problem NOT ONE IN SIGHT!!!!!!

In the old days my folks would talk to their neighbors over the fence, and swap veggies. My parents and all their neighbors had gardens and eveybody had "swaps" of produce. It was a different time.My street sux, and the people that live in it, I simply don't want to know them at all.
