Keep in mind that women can get pregnant at ANY time even on her period. There may be times during the cycle that would be more or less favorable for a pregnancy to occur, but know it can happen any time.

If a woman is about to have her period, then the egg has most likely reached the uterus unfertilized so the body will shed the blood it has prepared.

if she is in the luteal phase which is the phase following ovualtion, she can not get pregnant. There are only about 2-3 days each month a woman can get pregnant. If you are literally a few days beofre getting your period, the chance is very low b/c ovulation has taken place and has left the fallopian tube (where fertilization takes place) Also at this time the ling of the uterus is preparing to breakdown. iF there is a presence of clear or creamy cervical mucus, that is the most fertile time and if you are avoiding pregnancy, you shouldnot have unprotected sex.

I was 39 and got pregnant from having sex 2 days before my period was due to start. You can truly get pregnant at any time during your cycle (which I learned the hard way!).
