The only way is to stop your computer from doing automatic updates, you can do this by going into the XP control panel, clicking on automatic updates then select Turn off Automatic updates. You can run updates manually by visiting the microsoft website or alternatively in the automatic updates options in the control panel, you can set it to update at a time you will not be using your machine.

Change autoupdates so that it alerts you when some are ready but doesn't do anything. When you're going to take a break from computing, close all your applications. Right click on My Computer and select Properties. Go to the Automatic Updates tab and click on the link to the Windows Update web site. Then you get download and update the computer without it interfering with anything else you're doing.

I should think you would want auto updates. Why don't you go to Task Scheduler and schedule a time when when you think you might not be working and your PC could update without interfering with what you want to do?

you can't stop it effecting your internet connection because it's downloading information and limiting your currently available bandwidth.

you can either do updates when your not doing anything else on the internet (ie overnight when your sleeping) or do the update when you boot-up and leave the machine until it's finished.

The way I have mine set is to only notify me that updates are availiable, but to not download them automaticaly. Then I can check to be sure I get just the ones I want. I then click on "custom", and after the updates have been downloaded I look them over to see which ones I want, then disconnect from the net, disable firewall and anti-virus program, and then install the updates, and then re-enable the firewall and anti-virus programs before reconnecting to the net.

Mcafee has case by case allow/disallow enable it.
Or look for "disable automatic updates" in the program files.
Or go to Add/Remove programs, Remove the program then reinstall it and look for the option "automatically update" then select "no" or do not.
