A replacement for the word "is"...or how should I reword this?

The editor of my essay wrote, "Try not using the word "is" so much". Well what would I replace the word "is" or how should rephrase this:

Ayn Rand is an author of many novels and also the founder of the Objectivist philosophy.

My essay is required to be in the literary present tense.

Rand was the main founder...also I have used "is" in my first paragraph 4 times. The usage causes my essay to sound extremely choppy.
