The editor of my essay wrote, "Try not using the word "is" so much". Well what would I replace the word "is" or how should rephrase this:
Ayn Rand is an author of many novels and also the founder of the Objectivist philosophy.

Rand was the main founder...also I have used "is" in my first paragraph 4 times. The usage causes my essay to sound extremely choppy.

How about "Ayn Rand authored many novels and founded the Objectivist philosophy"?

Well "is is kind of necessary some times. But try maybe just rewording it and moving the "is" to a different part of the sentence, or just messing around to make it work by using a different verb in the sentence.
For instance:
Ayn Rand, an author of multiple novels, also founded Objectivist philosophy.
Try utilizing founded as the verb and you don't need to use is anymore.
[Edit] Literary present tense is necessary when talking about literature, but not about factual information, such as biographical information about an author. Ayn Rand is also dead, so it would be improper to use present tense while talking about her. That's a common grammatical rule. [/Edit]

You could try modifying the sentence this way...
Ayn Rand, author of many novels and founder of the Objectivist philosophy, went on to blah, blah, blah.
It complete changes the sentence but you might be able to combine the following sentence that you were going to have with this sentence to make it work.
