Check out some of Janny Wurts books, especially the Cycle of Fire trilogy. Or the Daria books (I can't remember the author). The books are The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown.
If you want something a bit different, but still completely amazing, Clive Barker has written the first two books of a series called Abarat. If you like fantasy, then you will enjoy these. The only problem is that he's taking too friggin' long to finish the next book.

I am a huge fan of LOTR as well, and I really haven't found too much out there with the same depth....Try The Mists of Avalon by M.Z. Bradely. You might also enjoy the Pendragon series by DJ MacHale or the Wizard series by Diane Duane. Happy reading!

Okay. A tough question but, if you haven't tried Douglas Adams's "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" Trilogy (containing 4 books), just give it a shot. Its sci-fi novel with a sense of humour no writer has ever reached. The funniest novels I have ever read. I hope you'll like that as an answer.

The term you guys are thinking of in the 82nd is Global Responce Force (GRF). They don't deploy to regular deployments such as Iraq or Afghanistan but were called up for the Earthquake in Haiti and were "on call" for the whole "Libya thing" The thing is the though you can't just go into the Army and do that. Like the other guys said. Its a rotating thing, and can last anywhere from a couple months to a couple years.

Try Eragon. I loved it. The movie is coming out soon.
I liked it because it is about a boy who finds a dragon egg, hides it and raises it and becomes a dragon rider. There is a complex story behind it with the boy losing his family because the mean king tries to find the hidden dragon egg and destroys his family. The boy sets off on a mission to get revenge and learn the complex world of dragon rider.
Check it out, it was a good story!
Also Stephen King's Gunslinger series! Absolutely great!

The "Xanth" series by Piers Anthony,
"The Dark Tower Series" by Stepen King
"Harry Potter" by JK Rowling
"The Mythadventures series" by Robert Asprin
"The Firebringer Trilogy" by Meredith Ann Pierce
"The Stand" by Stephen King (not a series, but long enough to be one.)
Also, many of Stephen Kings novels tie into the Dark Tower series, making it almost like one great big story
