Academic writing is usually verbose and long winded. Often it seems that the purpose is to use words that no one can understand and sentences so complex that the writer's meaning is essentially lost but at least the writer appears smart!!
Business writing on the other hand might be described as 'techical'. Very few adjectives are used and the sentences are generally short. The writing intends to convey an idea in a clear, concise manner with little room for misinterpretation by the reader. To sum it up, business writing should be short, sweet, and to the point.

yes. in order to communicate in business you don't want to use vocabulary that won't be understood by the audience.
an academic audience has a larger vocabulary and higher reading level (you can use longer sentences and more syllables per word)
it's more a difference in the audience. writing to suit the audience is a big rule in all kinds of writing.
if you are writing kids' books then you use certain words and language and sentence lengths and print sizes.
for business i would say don't write above 8th grade level.
for the general public don't go above 5th grade level.
but you can write at 12th grade and above for academic audiences.
it's not about puffing up your writing and being fake.
it's about communicating to your audience at their level.

In academic writing research can be done on any topic and it also carries long paragraphs with vast amount of vocabulary.
In business writing complex vocabulary is avoided and a writer tries to convey his/her message in simple and clear words.
