What do you think would make the best long weekend getaway for my husband and I to temporarily escape reality (three little boys and everyday work) We are coming from the central US which makes the western european countries slightly preferable for travel time on a short vaccation ... if you leave a 1, 2 and 7 year old with your dad the trip has to be short).

We are pretty experienced travelers. Get around on public transportation in Europe and all (some spanish and german spoken, can ask for the train in toilet in Italian and french LOL). We have visited most of the capitals, and may revist one of those. Havent done Spain or Portugal and are considering that or Malta. I want Rekjavik someday - but am saving that for the boys to enjoy too.

We may just do Paris or Rome again - it is always lovely and the metro is so easy to navigate.

What is your opinion, what was your best vaccation, is ther an obscure city with excellent architecture and museums???

Italy would get my vote- what about Venice? If you are going with your husband minus the children, Venice would be a beautiful way to romance eachother- it is absolutley fantastic, very easy to negotiate your way around in the water buses and of course you'd have no problems with the language :-)

I would not reccommend Malta. Its tiny (only a couple of miles in each direction) and very bland. Theres not much in the way of spectacular scenery or indeed anything of particular beauty.

Portugal would be very nice, of course much bigger than Malta but at least it's a lovely place to visit. If you are golfers then you will love Portugal- the hotels are good quality and the climate is reasonably mild in winter.

Spain of course is very diverse and Barcelona is a beautiful city. I have not been, but I've been to Valencia and it was also lovely.
I'm told Barcelona is great for a weekend break!

I'm sorry- I didn't like Paris much, not that there was anything wrong with the city- there was a lot to see, but I can't stand French food. However, if you've been and you like it, sometimes it's best to stick to what you know.

Another place to consider would be Cyprus. Stay in Paphos and hire a car to check out the island. It's the birthplace of Aphrodite- Goddess of love and has lots of history, culture and.. if you get up into the mountains- some fabulous scenery.
It is slightly further away but during the winter, the climate is a little warmer than Western Europe.

One final thought- what about Scotland?
There are direct flights from the USA to Glasgow and I can personally vouch for Glasgow as being one of the most friendly places in the world- and it's very easy to get around and it's safe. Best place to stay is the Glasgow Hilton in the city centre and if you can, try to take a train to Edinburgh (less than an hour away) to see Holyrood Palace & Edinburgh Castle to name only a couple of attractions. Everything in Edinburgh worth seeing can be done within easy travelling distance (usually the best way is on the open-topped bus)
There are also some good museums in Edinburgh, but Glasgow is much more authentic and the shopping there is fantastic. The art galleries in both cities are worth a look too.

Wherever you decide to go, I hope you have a lovely time.

Happy holidays!

I would choose Malta. That's pretty nice and interesting. Mixed culture, crossways from Africa to Europe. The architecture is really exciting, the landscape is amazing and it's mediterranean, so warm in wintertime. They speak good English and their native tongue, Maltese, is an unusual language a mixture of Italian and Arabic. That's a fantastic place for having a relaxing and interesting holiday. Best of luck !

For western Europe, Venice or Florence get my vote - beauty, museums, galleries, architecture, food, drink and romance abound. Slightly further afield (but negligible as a percentage of flying time) is Istanbul - for all of the above reasons plus exoticism.

I'm sure you'll have a great trip, whatever you decide. Enjoy!

You can consider Barcelona if you have never been there.
Also London and Lisbon are nice.

And when you have a one more day than a weekend, I would recommend by hometown, Istanbul.
