Definitely get someone in to look at it from a building and maintenance perspective before you put in an offer (or make it a condition of sale that it must pass an independent inspection). Make sure they look underneath the floor and in the attic, if at all possible - check for dry rot, solid foundations, etc. Check out the neighbourhood at different times of day, what's the traffic and noise like? Are gardens well maintained in the area, etc.? How close is it to schools, shops, freeways, or whatever else you need. Are prices of housing going up or down in this neighbourhood? Just a few things to look for.
