And there's Turkey's security guards
And there's the security guards to protect him from Turkey's security guards
And there's the security guards to protect Turkey's security guards from the Pope's security guards
An while that's all going on, the Pope and the Mufti of Ankara have nipped off for a coffee at Ali's.

Because hes a religious leader, Religions are always at war and there are a lot of sick people out there that would kill in the name of their god. Remember when Pope John Paul II got shot buy a Catholic hater? If people hate a certain religion and they're crazy enough to do something, they're going to hit that religion and the followers where it hurts. It's sad that he needs all those body guards, which he really does need. Oh and don't be a B!tch, God doesn't favor anyone, he's not Christ you know, he's an ordinary man.

The Pope does not need security guards. The security is to protect the Turks.

He is considered as a high-valued target by certain groups, be they religious or atheist in nature. Considering the amount of money that the Catholic church controls on a global level, he is also a high-prized target for the ransom potential alone. Hence, a small security detail wouldn't cut it if a well-organized group wanted to assasinate or kidnap him.
