Everyone who said December 21 is wrong.

Sunset for NY NY is 4:28 for December 3 through 12. Before and after, it is later by at least one minute. Somebody might know where to get it for the exact second, but I don't know where to access that data. But obviously, it would be some day between the 3rd and 12th.

Use the link below, and click on "Data Services":

Consider a couple of points here.

1. Easternmost portion of New York gets the earliest sunset every day...this being the Eastern tip of Long Island. Also this is assuming you mean NY State.

2. If you mean New York City, then the earliest sunset is the Winter Solistice...Dec 21. Sunset on this date is usually around 4:25.

Most likely Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day of the year for the Northern hemisphere.

The first day of winter is the shortest day of the year. Therefore the first day of winter has the earliest sunsets.

If memory serves me correctly, the shortest day of the year occurs on 21st of December in the northern hemisphere and 21st of June in the southern hemisphere.

my guess would be Dec 21st, as that's the shortest day of the year, world-wide (I think the official term is "equinox").
