Get tickets for something to do together or for her and your father. A play, a concert, a bike tour, a gym membership, an art exhibit, manicures and pedicures, an imax movie, etc. She might have a lot of things or be very picky about her things, but she loves you and she would most likely be very touched that you got something for the both of you to do together. If that's not your thing, think about a hobby she truly enjoys and perhaps get something to go with it. For example, my mom knits, so one year I bought her some really beautiful wool online from a farm in Vermont and a pattern for a pretty sweater that I thought she would like.

Get her the thing almost every mother wants- more time with you! How about a spa day for the two of you, a nice long lunch and to see a movie, go skiing or skating and then for coffee if you're active people. Best part of this is you get in on the present. My mum is always one of those 'Ohh, I don't need a present, dear' types, but she's a sucker for more time with her kids, especially since most of us have moved away. If you have a lot of money to spend, how about flying her to see a friend or relative she hasn't seen in a while, or fly them out to see her?
Good luck! (PS I bought my mother a photo calendar with pictures of our family over the years, and I'm taking her to see James Brown in January)

Make her something yourself. Nobody can get picky over a handmade gift that comes from the heart.
Things you could make her include:
- items like calendars, mugs, or decorated portraits incorporating family photos
- christmas tree ornaments (made of beads and wire, or cloth, or other things from an arts & crafts store)
- something useful like a box to put things in that you've decorated yourself, especially if you know she could use, say, a box to put over the kleenex or to keep her CD collection in. Maybe you can make her something to put her earrings on.
- any of these things could include something personal, like if you know she likes a certain animal, color, or quote- and again, family photos can always be used if you don't know her preferences.
Remember, the most valuable element of this kind of gift is LOVE- which is the one thing all mothers definitely want.

Well Jen, I suggest you go all out and get her a dog or a cat, whichever she likes better. Get one of these rare mixed breeds from a different solar system, you know the kind with short to long hair, plump to skinny or with a long or shot tail. Also, definitely with one pointed ear and one floppy ear which always makes a dog look thoughtful, like your mother's child.
You can't miss if you also give her a kiss.

Give her a gift for a free massage at a spa or day at the spa, or a gift card to her favorite store, or gift card to her favorite place to eat. For my mom one Christmas I bought her gift certificates to get her nails, feet, and hair done. Wasn't that expensive.

get her a couple different gift cards to her favorite places, and tell her with so many ideas for her, you couldn't settle on one so you are giving her a variety of her favorites to spend on what she wants
