I go to Kenya quite regularly and I most often take US dollars with me. British pounds are also quite common for exchange.
If you take US dollars, try to take the newest ones and nothing smaller than 20 dollars. Many exhange (forex) bureaus will not take the older dollars or smaller bills.
You can also use the cash machines and withdraw from your VISA card. By the way, VISA is much more common than MasterCard to use as a credit card.
Not advised is to bring Travellers Cheques because you can only really exchange these at a bank (which can take a looonnnng time).
Normally I take some cash and then just withdraw the rest as I need it from the cash dispensers at different banks.
The currency in Kenya is the Shillingi.
Hope this helps - enjoy your visit!

It depends where you are coming from. I live in Luxembourg and take Euro to Kenya. USD and GBP are also widely acceptable.

We went a few years ago and were recommended to take USA dollars. They could'nt do enough for us. Acceptable everywhere.
