I feed my Betta's as soon as I put them in the new tank. If they eat it's a good sign their not to stressed. It also temporarily distracts them from the fact that there some where new. I feed my Betta's six day's a week and then skip one. Betta's are pigs and will eat them selves to death. You should only feed them what they can eat in 3-5 min. But if they still get to fat then only feed every other day the same amount

I do not feed fish the day I take them home. The reason for this is that the food they are given at the petstore is a different brand of that which i use. Also it comes from a larger community tank sharing the same food. Ontop of all of this I already have all my tanks setup and already with fish in them.

Adding a new fish to your aquarium is equally as stressful for your current residents as it is for new ones. (even try imagining the drive home in a plastic bag!) As mentioned betta splenden are picky eaters and often will not accept food on the first day either. To avoid wasted food at the bottom of your tank leading to an ammonia spike in your water. I would urge you to follow suit and avoid feeding your new fish the very first day you get them.

I would reccomend feeding it lightly in the morning of the next day, then thereafter placing it onto a normal schedule that your existing fish (if you have any) have been following.

Intestinal tract diseases and other such anomolies such as fatal constipiation often show up within 2 days of owning a fish. If petco tells you to put food in the bag, I'm telling you now... Boycott petco. Or go out and buy some tattooed fish then when you get bored flush them down a toilet.

You can try it anytime. Bettas are finicky eaters at the start. If you see that the betta has not touched the food for 2 hours, remove the food from the tank. Otherwise it will foul the tank.

The Betta will soon start eating (may take anytime from 2-5 days).

Make sure you "fast" your betta once a week --that helps it to be not constipated. Also you can microwave some peaks for a minute and after they are back to room temperature, remove the shells of the peanuts and feed about 2 to the betta -- this will help his constipation as well.

Hope this helps!

PetCo says to put food in the tank before you release them into their new home because they will be stressed from their ride home, no matter hoe gentle.

Make sure you float th ebag with the fish in it in the tank for 5 to 10 minutes before you release it into the tank so that it can get use to the water temp. that you have and meet the other fish.

Also putting food intoo the tank before you release the fish will fill up your other fish so that they don't think the new fish is a snack

It's good to feed as you put the fish in your tank.
Food helps the fish stay calm and deal with the shock of moving better.

I try feeding the betta when it will take at least one pellet(I use the pellet stuff from Hikari, it is really great and doesn't smell) pr when the fish is near the surface of the water.

Give him a day or so to get used to his new surroundings. Dont be surprised if he doesnt eat for a few days - thats an awful lot of excitement for a small fish, getting moved around. However, give him the option of a couple of pellets, and if he doesnt eat, wait another day. He wont starve himself.
