what storage device do you recommend when backing up databases?

The answer on your question depends on the size of the files to be backed up, however I recommend you to use the external hard drive. I think that is the best place for backup storage because it is bigger than CDs/DVDs and it is not such corruptible.

It depends on how much and what you're trying to back up.

Over 4 gigs or a SQL database, tape with good backup software.

Just a lot of little files or one or two big ones under 4 gigs, then copy to a DVD. Under 700 MB then CD.
