Technically, it may have been the Eskimoes were among the FIRST to discover it. It was groups of Alaskan natives migrating southward which ended up populating the entire region with 'native Americans'.
After that, it was groups of Norse farmers who were the next outsiders to find the American continent. Militant Vikings, of course, were raiders and would have no interest in the comparatively booty-free Americas, but there were several failed colonies.
Following that, Christopher Colombus was one of the first Europeans to completely NOT discover America. Even though natives kept telling him about the OTHER sea, he insisted to his dying day that he had found a route to the Indies (even constructing models of the Earth that were pear-shaped to accomodate all his new discoveries).
Other navigators were a little bit more on the ball. Nobody can say for certain whether the map-maker Amerigo Vespucci really was the very first European to come to the correct conclusion, but his voyages to South America starting 1499 gave him plenty of evidence for it.
There is some suggestion that maps produced with Amerigo's name on the continent were actually intended to mock the whole idea of a 'New World'. After all, most discoveries are named after an explorer's LAST name, not their first. But that's the subject of a whole different discussion!

Many people have discovered America over a long period of time. If you mean where did the United States originate the answer would be our country was the outgrowth of two English colonies: Jamestown Settlement and the Mass. Bay Colony. Although Columbus discoved the Americas with 4 voyages he never came to what now is the US of A.

Christopher Colombus is often credited for it, but it wasn't until his third and fourth voyages in 1498 and 1502 that he actually made it to the continents- just along the east coast of Central America and the north-east coast of Brazil.
There's evidence that viking exploreres lead by Leif Ericson made it to the east coast of Canada (probably modern-day Newfoundland and Labrador) as early as 1000 CE, though they didn't settle there- they just gathered timber which was taken back to Greenland for building houses, ships, etc.
The very earliest people to "discover" America probably crossed over the land bridge between Russia and Alaska (now the Bering Strait) before the end of the last ice age- 10,000+ years ago, and from there spread across North and South America.

"discover" is a loose term. Since the dawn of man, there have been people on the American continent. As far as discovery from Europeans, Leif Erikkson, a viking, actually discovered America quite some time before Christopher Columbus.

The Native Americans or does just being there not count?
Though many believe it to have bee Christopher Columbus who discovered America there are many modern theories that support the claim that Vikings from Scandinavia visited America many centuries before the Europen "discovery"

it rather is ironic yet actual that historic info are oftentimes distorted and written to thrill the winning factor which might propose the factor which could dictate words to the author. it is actual of all wars in international history wherein the victor or the so called civilized factor have been painted as angels and the vanquished or the different factor which did not have the potential to get their factors of view throughout the time of have constantly been shown as barbarians or worse. the two facets have dedicated crimes against humanity in equivalent way however the loser is tried and the victor is given a hero's welcome. hence if the indigenous persons are actually not credited with saving Columbus and his team from starvation and specific dying interior the unusual land, that's basically the procedures of the international, we credit him for researching united states of america whilst he could have been demoted for undesirable navigation!!! those are the procedures of the international and we would desire to constantly discover ways to settle for the only million/2 truths as acts of glory???????????

What about Amerigo Vespucci from Italy?
He may have visited after Columbus, actually. But I believe we got the name America from his first name... Just as an FYI.
