It really depends on where the job ends up (you don't want a nasty commute), and the kind of geographic area you prefer. Do you like the mountains, beach, inland, etc.? San Diego, San Jose and Long Beach are more coastal communities, Van Nuys, Sacramento and Riverside are inland.
I've lived in Riverside, Long Beach, (near) San Diego and my sister lives near Sacramento. My niece lives in San Jose. Of these, I'd live in Long Beach again (on the right street/neighbourhood), and have been considering Sacramento. Every city has its advantages/disadvantages:
Long Beach - close to beach, close but not IN Los Angeles, but has some bad neighbourhoods, and unless you live and work in the same town, you'll have to deal with traffic.
San Jose - not far from San Francisco, not far from the coast, again unless you live and work in same neighbourhood, you'll have to deal with traffic and a long commute.
Los Angeles - busy town with lots to offer, but quality of life is very dependent on the neighbourhood you choose. Again, traffic is a way of life.
San Diego - close to the beach, more relaxed atmosphere, great Mexican food! Same traffic/crime problems of any big city.
Van Nuys - smog central! Close to LA, lots of traffic.
Sacramento - State capital, real estate not too pricey, lots of growing communities just out of the city limits, morning and evening traffic.
Riverside - lots of smog and heat in the summer, housing has really become expensive, same traffic issues.

Oakland and riverside have heavy gang activity.
Van Nuys is a freeway clusterfuck. Long Beach and San Diego are ok.
LA is so spread out that you HAVE to use a car.
Sacramento would be my choice to suggest to you. Houses are cheaper than LA area. It is 2 hours to ski resorts, 2 hours to the pacific ocean and has a pretty good public transportation system that carry bicycles. You can use a train to get to San Francisco, commute to ferry in Vallejo that goes to SF.
The only negative thing about Sacramento are the few weeks during the summer when it gets really hot. But southern cali is hot too.

San Diego
Riverside
Van Nuys
Long Beach
Sacramento
Tei for last - Oakland and San Jose
San Diego - prettiest and most expensive
Riverside - nice neighborhood feel
the next three are regular, good and bad spots in each.
Oakland and SJ are both sprawling, crowded and there are always traffic jams. They're both too noisy.
As an alternative, there are outlying areas around each of your choices that are beautiful and rural. Check these areas out too!

Long Beach is where we are looking to move, we now live in Canoga Park. Rent and housing are cheaper in Long Beach, and my husband just got a new job in Santa Fe Springs, so LB is closer. Riverside is very pretty, little more pricey. If you are looking at LB, Huntington Beach is also AWESOME and affordable (that is our first choice). Van Nuys is ok, just ok. And the others are too far from here to tell. We are from the east, just been here 2 years, so its my humble opinion. Good luck!

I agree with the poster who suggested Huntington Beach. However, I am from Oakland --- and it's not as bad as the hype. Why do you suppose it's one of the most expensive cities in the nation?
Oakland has some great neighborhoods (Hiller Highlands, Trestle Glen, Montclair, Piedmont [technically a separate city, but surrounded completely by Oakland], Glenview ...
Oakland also has some of the wealthiest SUBURBS in the nation: Walnut Creek, Lafayette, San Ramon, Danville, Blackhawk ...
