Apparently very few people answering this question know what "persecute" truly means. So, let me hold their hands through this one:

According to Websters Dictionary, Harper Collins, 2002 persecute means to opress...subject to persistent ill-treatment. So c'mon, people. I don't know what cave you've been living in, but like it or not, the Dixie Chicks obviuosly WERE persecuted for their beliefs, and its a damn shame.

Dubya is a joke. His mess in Iraq is a joke. The federal deficit that occurred under his watch and Republican controlled Congress is a joke. He can't even speak english or use proper grammar, and, from the answers posted earlier on this question, neither can his followers!

I'm not sure why people reacted so harshly to the Dixie Chicks. I think some of it was because they were on foreign soil when she made the remark, and some of it was just good old fashioned American Pride. We were on our way to war and after what had happened I think people thought even if you didn't approve of the war we ought all be standing together as American citizens against those S.O.B's who attacked us. We needed to be presenting a united front and what she said could be construed as a weakness. I personally do not agree with what she said; however I believe she had every right in the world to say it. That's what America is all about. Remember Free Speech people. If we start condeming our own citizens just because we don't like what they say or do then we are no better than that murdering Saddam who had people killed and murdered for not agreeing with him. I still like the Dixie Chicks music and I did buy their latest album, but I also support President Bush. He is the leader of our country and we need a strong leader right now. Someone who isn't going to take any crap off those guys. So agree with Natalie or not you still have to agree with the foundation and principles our country was built on, and keep supporting America.

They were persecuted, but they aren't being persecuted now (though the choice of the word persecute may be off base a tad). It's called free speech, and we all use it. But, when you use your free speech to say something you know will anger many people, especially when most of those people are the ones that buy your records, you have to be willing to accept the consequences of reduced sales, etc. They did that, without complaining much, and I give them credit for that. Now they've been vindicated and are back in the swing of things.

Our culture is notorious for this type of backlash. Anyone remember the Lennon debacle, when he said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus? There were bonfires of their albums and DJ's wouldn't play their records all across the Bible Belt. They "recovered" too, not that it put much of a dent in their sales worldwide. But it's a good analogy to what happened to the Dixie Chicks.

It's simple. They shouldn't. They have a right to their own opinions even if such opinions are not popular.
But because they said something or have views that are unpopular underscores the importance of an education. Because when a person is educated they can usually make up their own minds about any given issue no matter what others think.
There are those who truly think for themselves and there are those who are followers. The powers that be focus more on the "followers" in matters of controversy.

If it were a rapper (Kanye West ) or any other person aside from a country singer there would not be much adue over the whole situation. Unfortunately most of the Dixie Chicks fans are coutnry music lovers, which are primarily republicans and Toby Keith red-neck fans.

I think it's too bad they have been persecuted as they have for a comment. Surely they are not the only country singers to think that, they are just the only ones who have said it out loud.

You need to learn the definition of persecution.

People voicing their opinion in response to the Dixie Chick's comments is not persecution. It is an exercise of their rights to voice a differing opinion.

they were persecuted. if someone would have said that about Clinton while he was in office, it would have been no big deal. however, with Bush, it is nearly a crime. In fact it is. One man received a ticket for having an anti-Bush bumper sticker. That is what this country has been reduced to under the harmful leadership of Bush.

I don't think that exercising your right to free speech by choosing not to endorse the Dixie Chicks because you don't agree with their point of view is persecution...

Who is "persecuting" them? Other have equal rights to criticize their opinions. The 1st amendment is a double edged sword.
