If you want to write its name, it is Zajecar (but instead of "c" there is one specific Serbian letter, very similar to "c"). If you want to pronounce it, the closest to the original would be Zayechar.
It is a beautiful Serbian town, pretty close to the border with Romania, but even much closer (only 8 kilometers) to the border with Bulgaria. There is a famous archaeological site from Roman era in its neighborhood, only a few kilometers away, but it was not a fortress. It was a palace actually, called Felix Romuliana (pronunciation would be close to "Romooliana"). It was built by the Roman emperor Gai Galerie Valerie Maximilian in late III and early IV century.
The name of the rock festival is Gitarijada (pronunciation would be close to "Guitariada"). "Gitara" in Serbian means "guitar", so the name of the festival tells everything. It is a very famous festival in the region. It was particularly popular in the late eighties, while there was still the old Yugoslavia. The festival has a very long tradition. This year there was 40th Gitarijada :))) .
Gitarijada is a great event and a great occasion for young people who love rock music to spend three marvelous days. It is also known as the occasion when most people in the town are not able to sleep at night :), due to the loud music, of course. But people of Zajecar still love and are very proud of their Gitarijada.
It takes place every August at Kraljevica, a huge park at the edge of the city. Actually, Kraljevica is much more than just a park, only part of it is arranged by men, but there is also a big forest there. Kraljevica is very beautiful and people of Zajecar enjoy spending their free time there.
Anyway, many famous regional (not only Serbian) bands play every year at Gitarijada, but this festival is also famous for its competition for young bands, which are at the beginning of their career.
If you would like to come and visit Gitarijada, you are more that welcome! You will definitely have a great time! If you have a band and would like to take part in it, you should contact the organizers, as there might be even a chance for you to play there
(if they decide that you are good enough). Anyway, if you are interested in it, it is worth a try!
