Geeze, if you don't have a job the best time to look for one is today, then tomorrow, then the next day and so on. If you don't have a job (which includes being a full-time parent supported by a spouse with a job), your job is getting a job. Take whatever job you can get, and continue to look for a job that you really want.

As far as hiring during this season, it should be relatively easy to get a job in retail this time of year.

Most jobs with benefits like paid holidays refrain from hiring just before a holiday period. The reason is they do not want the extra payroll expenditure of paying you on a holiday and not receive any monetary gain. In addition, they probably have current staff scheduled for vacation around that time and need every available employee in working mode rather than assigned to assist in the training of new personnel.

EDIT: Oh, another reason that the end of the year is bad is most businesses budget for personnel a year in advance. Chances are any new positions budgetted were already filled. With a new year comes a new budget.

Try just after the beginning of January but hurry or else they may decide to wait until after MLK day.
