Spoken like a true underachiever.

So we can't let a few people be proud of their achievements and hard work because it might make the slackers feel bad about not trying to be more productive?

The results should be released. High achievers should be rewarded.

I believe class rankings can be quite harmful rather than helpful. Believe it or not, I was actually in the top 10% of my high school class (out of a class of 400 that wasn't too shabby). I had a 4.0 GPA etc... so I'm not sayin this out of spite or any similar feeling.

Class rankings give colleges an opportunity to take advantage of students by collecting application fees without actually reading their application. Another local high school near mine decided to stop giving out any sort of ranking information after learning from an admissions official at a very prestigious university (won't say which, but it starts with a G) that 9 times out of 10, the university won't even read an application unless the student was in the top 15 places in their class.

Rankings also help demean and discourage kids in school already. By saying someone is number X, it may make kid number Z feel less significant in the eyes of the school than kid number X.

That all said, I don't believe we need a national law to prohibit this. Each school district must evaluate for itself whether or not it feels it's worthwhile to rank its students.

Nope, it's the law. It is part of your "Permanent Record" and we all know that will follow you for life. I was so miffed when NASA rejected me for the astronaut program due to the unfortunate incident in 2nd grade.

No, let those that did the work get credit for it. Let the lazy loafers report to McDonalds and Burger King for their new careers.
