Because they ALWAYS have been playing in the NFC East, and have well established rivalries with all of the other teams in that division.

The NFL has never been completely geographically correct. Most of this stems from the major population centers being in the eastern part of the US when pro football started. Then, when they absorbed the AAFC in the early 50s and then expanded in the 70s and 90s they were stuck with a hodge-podge of teams they had to align while at the same time maintaing traditional rivalrys.

For years, the NFC West had the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints, and for a short time also the Carolina Panthers. Heck, it still has the St. Louis Rams.

Same could be said about the Kansas City Cheifs being in the AFC West. It's all about rivalries.

Also consider the St. Louis Rams in the NFC West.

When the owners decided to split into 4 divisions they voted on 1 of 7 different wyas to split them. Most owners wanted the dallas, washington, Philly, and New York rivalries to continue. It is the same with the afc east. Most owners wanted to continue the Buffalo/Miami rivalry.

Yah it is alot of things with divisions in the NFL are unexplainable, I think it had to do with keeping teams with well established rivalries in the same divisions though.

Because the Redskin/Cowboy rivalry is the best in NFL history.

because they have three long-standing rivals in that division in the Redskins, Eagles, and Giants, especially the Redskins.
