I have some good candidates, but for one single memory it would have to be Ravensberger's "Metropolis" designed by Sid Sackson.
(It is still, rarely, out there on eBay)

Newly bought, my friend and I played a game of it, and intrigued, went straight into another. And another.
We played seventeen games straight, as we tried to work out the subtle variants of a game that was not that complex.
All to the background of really good music.
It was the day of the Live Aid Concert. Yes, that first one.

It is almost my idea of a perfect game. Easy to teach, simple rules, requiring some thought, and doesn't take too long to play. It gives a beginner a chance, but an expert or calculating player has an edge. Just an edge.

I have a few other "five minutes to teach but worth playing"
games in my collection, but they are quite rare. Most games are too simple, or complex and fine only for enthusiasts or regular players.

CHESS rules!
A certain friend and I used to challenge each other while smoking a certain herb and drinking single-malt scotch! We were very evenly matched intellectually and in chess skills. The game of chess is such a deep mental process that our games would almost become real-life battles between two opposing warlords! It was like a hallucination, but you knew it wasn't real. You would be concentrating so hard, you could almost SEE the opposing soldiers battling it out while you supplied the strategies. It was awesome.

Monopoly.

One night, three of us stayed up almost all night playing it. Alexis had the yellow properties and the railroads and I had Boardwalk and parkplace and a few other smaller properties.

Joey went bankrupt early on, so he would sneak up and steal Alexis' money to help me pay off my debts. It lasted 5 hours until she won.
