There's this 12-year-old kid I know and she told me that if she and her classmates come to class with their clothes damp from the rain, the teacher complains that they will stink up the classroom and will make them give her $5 to change into the clothes that she provides (they don't get to keep the clothes). Is a teacher allowed to do this? These are kids from low-income neighborhoods I'm talking about so $5 is a lot of money for them.

I have never heard of such a thing. I teach and my students smell all the time between musty/smoke clothes, to damp clothes, to gross gym clothes.

The way I get around it is spray the heck out of the room with Febreeze. Since my students are a bit older (6th grade) I tell them as a class that deoderant is their friend and to use it. They think its funny but once I give the speech, the smell suddenly disappears.

If the teacher is charging $5 for the clothes, the kids should get their money back when they return the clothes. I would contact the child's school to discuss with administration if/why this is possible that she (the teacher) is getting away with this.

That teacher should not be allowed to teach anywhere in this country!! What a disgrace to all teachers. That is definitely abusive as well as discriminatory and morally wrong!!! First of all the poor child has a disability and she has not only produced years of psychotherapy and shame in the child, but she has taught the other children that it is okay to bully others out of your group, to hurt others with your words and actions and that those that need your help the most should be stepped on and over. Pulled this from a response to news article: "Great concept from the teacher. Now, stand her up in front of the parents of the school, let her hear what the parents think of her, and vote whether to keep her or fire her.

That is definitely an illegal business that she is running.She needs to understand that she can't say those things to kids nor charge them for clothes that they can not keep. She works for a public school in a deprived neighborhood, ya, sometim es kids stink, especially if they had been out in the rain. Oh well, they're kids. You need to report this to the school board and not let the her do this to the children anymore!

Hi there;

No the teacher is NOT allowed to charge for the rental of dry clothes.
Report this teacher to the principal and if this practice continues go to the school board.
That teacher is mentally and emotionally abusing the students and that is abominable to say the least.

I would tell the parents to write to the principal and ask for the written legal policy that allows teacher to do this.
I would send a copy of this letter to the superintendent to let them know what's going on.

This did come from a 12-year old. Maybe before we criticize this teacher the information should be verified.

Offhand I would say she is the one that stinks.

If a kids parents are really broke I can understand most anything, but I have seen many of these people who have money to gamble, drink, and smoke, and send their kids to school looking like they are homeless. Two sides to a coin.
