Is doing the same thing again expecting a different result?

I ask this because someone beat me to the 'if you always do . . . ' question. He had a LOT of incorrect answers.

Ben Franklin first said this and then Albert Einstein used the same phrase. I have personal experince with the truth of this. Sometimes you just have to stop and say why in the h.. are you doing this? The futility of some human activities is as old as the myth of Sisyphus who was compelled to roll a huge rock up a steep hill, but before he reached the top of the hill the rock always escaped him and he had to begin again. If you are a person with dogged determination it is definitely something to keep in mind.

I'm sure you'll get many wittier answers to your question but if you're truly interested in the definition of insanity, read Going Sane by Adam Phillips, it's an utterly brilliant and sideways thinking philosophical book on the subject of sanity and insanity...and besides it will give you something to gnash your teeth on while you're doing that same thing over and over again.

Insanity is doing the same thing expecting a different result
People who don't learn history are doomed to repeat it.
Everyone sees someone in a bad state and thinks "That won't happen to me."
Yet it does.
Therefore, everybody's insane!
