It is a British celebration. Boxing Day refers to both the day after Christmas, December 26th, and the Public Holiday which follows Christmas Day, should the 26th fall on a weekend.

Here is a site about the origins of the day:

Cricket is played on this day in several countries, especially Australia and New Zealand. It has become a tradition just as having football games on certain dates in the U.S. is a tradition.

In Australia, a test match starting on December 26th is called the Boxing Day Test Match, and is played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground before the largest crowd of the summer.
