well, i believe that talent takes only a small part in becoming really good at a sport. Sure, Micheal Phelps has a predisposition to be a really good swimmer because of the way he is built (really long arms, strong upper-body, large hands), but i don't think that its all that. Anyone can become really good at a sport if they work hard and long enough. they may have to work harder to become better in their techniques than people that may have "talent," but i'm positive that it is possible.

Natural talent is a necessary, but far from sufficient, condition for Olympic success. Like it or not, not everyone is born with the same level of talent, and therefore the vast majority of us could never win an Olympic gold no matter how hard we train.

That's one reason why so many athletes turn to drugs. It's a way to enhance one's level of "talent," albeit an illegal and artificial way to do so.

A book I read recently called The Champion Maker (Amazon link below) looks at these issues is a way that really makes you rethink what athletic fairness is all about.

Talent is a small part of it, as you have to be able to do the event so naturally there has to be some kind of coordination say for example in the event I did 100m hurdles, but hard work, circumstance(ability to train, proper place to train, proper equipment), diet, and maybe a really good day. some athletes have won an olympic medal when not expected to, because the person who was supposed to win had a bad day(eg Athens 100mh final Canadian Perdita Felicien falling)
and some people say the way things have been looking in athletics, a good chemist and doctor and lots of money to pay that chemist

I think talent plays a small role. What is most important is having that dream to compete, working harder than you could imagine, and body confirmation.

For example in body confirmation, I'm short so I don't think I would be good at competing in basketball. But, if I worked really hard, stayed positive, made it a goal, I might be a good gymnast

Talent is a necessity. Hardwork is very important too. Look at it like this, someone who is talented but lazy will lose to someone who works hard, but then there are people who are hard working AND talented, and then what are you going to do? Work ten times harder? At a certain point you can't do it, its impractical they are simply better.
