i will explain this in a basic way so you can understand everything
the first thing you need to do is find out what type of memory(ram)you have in your p.c...to do this go to http://www.crucial.com/,and run the "scan my system"option, this will scan your system and give you a report on what type of memory you need
a yellow security bar will drop down when you start, you need to install the active x control option(its safe to do) and then the scanner will be able to scan your p.c
when you look at the report you will see the type of memory you need,it will be either sd-ram,ddr sdram or ddr2 sdram.however the best thing is to print the report out and take this to your local computer shop as they will understand exactly the memory you will need
once you have the memory, open your p.c case and you then should locate your memory banks(these are the slots for your memory)and will be found next to your processor at the side of the motherboard
take your memory(hold by the sides,,do not touch the chips as you can damage the memory if handled wrong)and find a empty slot, then gently inset the memory into the slot,do not force it,it will only go in one way,and make sure that the white retaining clips, snap into place these will hold the memory in place
restart the p.c and your bios will recognize your new memory and you may need to press a f1 or f8 button to accept the changes you have made, but this dosent happen with every p.c
you have now comlpleted your memory upgrade, and you will notice a instant improvement in performance, ecspecially if you upgrade using a 256mb upgrade, however buy as much as you can afford as the more memory you use the better,a 512mb memory module only costs around £35 and this will give your p.c 764mb system memory,a massive improvement
any problems let me know
good luck

I don't think 36mb ram will make much difference. The swap file (virtual ram on the hard disc) will make it up if it's needed, which it probably won't. It's better to install security software and slow things down a bit than have no security software!

there is not any reduce to the anount of memory u can installation. The ram is provided in sticks which may be doubled up(ie 256mb to 512mb) although the clockspeed should be a similar on both memory sticks. To the guy lower than, u can get up to 2gb mem sticks now which providing the clock speeds adventure will be put in so if 2gb is the most u can get then he doesn't have a reduce does he:)

1. First find out how much RAM spaces in your computer you have. do this by opening your comp and seeing how many ram slots you have, (RAM is located on the big green bit and are the long sticks)
2. Find out the type of ram e.g. pc133 is one kind and PC 556 is a different king then find the ram compatible and just stick it in.

you would need someone who knows about computers because it involves opening your computer and inserting a new memory dimm (dual in line memory module) and you need to know what type of memory your computer takes
