It is supposed to be "semi-formal" but I want to look appropriate for her family. I have asked her what she is wearing and shes wearing this outrageous black dress, but she is supposed to be more dressed up than everyone else. I asked her what her relatives are going to wear and she didnt answer me. Then I asked her what I should wear and she didnt answer me either.
So what do you think would be appropriate? I'm looking for answers from Hispanic people who have family parties.

I'm not treating this like a costume party. I'm treating it like any other party. I want to make sure I am dressed appropriately. I have friends from lots of different countries, and they have different traditions than my american ones. Thats all.

Well, I am Spanish, actually from Spain, I don't know if she is Mexican. Spanish people like to wear pastel colours, I think a nice knee high party dress with a dark colour would be fine. Black is a horrible colour to wear for my family, the just want to look more grown up. I would try blue or purple. or a white top and black pants

It shouldn't really make a difference if they are hispanic or not. Hispanic people are some of the most accepting people of other races. Just wear whatever YOU would wear to ANY semi-formal event. A dressy/casual dress would probably work, or even a pants suit might work. These are things that could pass for a semi-formal event and don't be overly concerned that THEY are hispanic!

Don't wear a sombrero and castanets...
Just dress nicely. The latino element is irrelevant. As a matter of fact, treating this like a costume party is sort of disrespectful.

Doesn't sounds like much of a friend if she cannot answer you. I would buy something a level or two lower than what she is wearing. It is always better to be overdressed, than underdressed.
