Division winners will be chosen based on head-to-head results with other teams in the division (i.e. say 6 of the Colts 8 wins came against the Jags, Texans, and Titans, the Colts would be 6-0 in the division and thus the division champs). If there is a tie inside the division, it then goes to results within the conference (i.e. say the Colts and the Jaguars both are 5-1 in the division each with a loss to the other, the NFL then looks at their records against other AFC teams, so say the Jaguars are 3-1 against AFC teams and the Colts are 2-2, the Jags would win the division. That is how the division winners would be determined, and that accounts for 8 out of 12 total playoff spots. I believe when determining the 4 Wild Card spots, only the conference records are looked at, but I am not 100% sure on that.

And I'll be damned if this ever happens... : )

Just to correct the chick above me, there are 32 teams just in case you didn't know, and I do believe this would be mathematically possible, it is just a far cry!

First, this will never happen. Depending on scheduling it would not even be possible. But if it did the NFL would then use the same set of tiebreakers they use when two teams are tied for a spot. It doesn't matter if there are 20 teams or 2 teams tied for a spot they would still use the same set of tie breakers.

First of all that would never happen, but if it actually did, they would choose the team with the best division record, and so on. The team with the best division record would be one of the top 3 seeds in the playoffs

Then you might as well get ready to give up the ghost.

Seriously? Besides being a season to forget, it would be based on who beat who where and the scores of those games. Hmm. Sounds sorta' like the BCS...

The Lions and Cardinals would end their streaks of 25 straight losing seasons.
