I've got to second (or third, or fourth, by now) the recommendation to take riding lessons such as those offered by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. They will have an instructor who will teach you how to ride in a safe environment and a lot of information about bikes and equipment.

Some riders have no trouble starting out on a 600 cc cruiser, but others find them a little too heavy for a first bike. You'll get an idea of where you stand after taking the lessons and getting some practice with a smaller bike.

Then I would suggest just taking a look at your local motorcycle dealerships. They will let you "try on" the bikes on the showroom floor if you ask, and you can sit on different models to see how they feel for you. If it feels too heavy, too large, or too uncomfortable, trust your own instincts over the salesman's - don't get a bike you will not feel comfortable riding.

Try a used suzuki savage 600. I know a lot of people your size who ride them and say they are bullet-proof. Liquid cooled, shaft drive (no chain to mess with), and responsive. You can get a good deal on a used 600 and it will last a lot of miles. If you want a bike with the least amount of maintainence, check out a used BMW R65. If you are the least bit mechanically inclined I would suggest taking a small engine repair course at a local trade school.

If I were you ... I'd star by going down to borders and flipping through some bike magazines and see which style catches your eye... Then go and sit on a few bikes at your local dealer and see which feel the most comfortable.

A good way to start is also to sign up for the Motorcycle Saftey Course - MSF. They provide the bike to learn to ride on + help you get your license and gaining valuable experience before you get out on the road.

I think a good place to start is to enroll in the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's RiderCourse. This will equip you with everything you will need to know about riding and maintenance. It will also teach you how to handle just about anything you will encounter while on a bike.

I ride an Aprilia Atlantic 500. It's a maxi-scooter and a ton of fun. I ride with my little "gang". They all ride Harleys (which are so overrated) and make fun of me, but who's hands and backs hurt at the end of the day? Yeah, not mine. :-) Anyway, whatever you decide, make sure you have fun!

The FIRST thing you need to do is to take the Motorcycle Safety Course. Don't go out and buy a bike and then decide you don't want it. With the class, you will get to ride one for a couple of days. Plus it will take the place of the license road test, and help with insurance.

Skip the Hardley Davidson .... too expensive for a starter bike. Take a look at Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki's web sites. New or used? I 'd go for a good used bike first.

I got my first bike in July. It's an '05 Yamaha V-Star 650. I'm 5'6" and it's a great size bike for me, however the girlfriend I ride with is 5'2" and it is low enough and centered enough for her to balance and flat-foot as well.

There are MANY types of bikes, but I'm very happy with this one. I hope you totally dig whatever you decide to buy.

Have fun and ride safe!

Take a motorcycle safety course to begin with and pass the course. If you dont pass the course, forget the bike. Otherwise, buy a good used bike from cycletrader.com

Keep your helmet on.

best place to start is the beginners riders course offered by your local comunity college. A bike will only go as fast as you want it to go so dont be intimidated by size. most are also adjustable to your body size and frame so dont worry about that either. Most important is learning to ride properly!

can you ride? Defensively, with intelligent anticipation, using acceleration and braking, concious of road position and aware of your vanishing point, moving nearer and further away?

I just wondered. A 600 can be a quick bike which does demand skill, reflexes and experience.
