I've become Scrooge and the Grinch rolled into one and I wonder if I'm not the only one. Let me clarify, I'm not mean or rude or anything, I'm just tired of Christmas being shoved down my throat every second from Nov 1 on. The commercialism is impossible to ignore as it is constantly advertised on TV, the newspaper, and every storefront. I'm tired of the overspending every year that my wife does which contributes to my kids becoming more and more materialistic. I find it difficult to focus on the "true meaning of Christmas" because I don't know what it is anymore and every one around me appears to be caught up in only the hype. I'm no longer very religious so I don't find comfort in the Christian beginings of the holiday. Any ideas on brightening my mood?

Christmas is no longer just a Christian holiday. My family is not religious yet we've celebrated Christmas every year. For us it was never about Jesus; it was all about Santa. (Well, for my dad it's about Festivus and the Winter Solstice. He too is a bit of a Scrooge but gave in a few years ago when he decided that he just wouldn't call it Christmas). For me, Christmas is a time to show/tell people that I love them. We live hectic lives and sometimes we forget to tell the people in our lives how much we care about and appreciate them. Christmas is a good time to reiterate how much I love my family and friends. Do your best to ignore our conspicuous consumer society and tell the people that you love how you feel! Plus you can enjoy all the parties and delicious food!

I completely understand, so after my divorce I changed the rules for Christmas and now it's my favorite holiday again.

I only buy presents for a few people, I spend the day with people I love and bag the obligation to visit people I don't like, and I always do something special for myself.

I wonder what would happen at your house if you canceled Christmas this year.

Good luck, E. Scrooge!

You are focused on the wrong things. Use Christmas as an opportunity to spend more time with the ones that you love to spend time with, be they friends or family. Since I liberated myself from the bonds of family obligation and started seeing more of my friends around the holidays a few years ago, I have a new lease on life during the holiday season.

No worries, I am sick of Christmas too. The holidays accomplish nothing but causing undue stress on people. For all you people who love Christmas, you don't realize there are people out there with no credit cards and hardly any money to spend and to them, Christmas is just another reminder of how their lives suck. As for the religious part of it, if Christmas was really all about religion, I think it would probably be about as boring as All Saints' Day.

Well, turn off the t.v. and enjoy the weather, the snowflakes falling. I would make a trip to a nice small town, where the channels on the t.v only reach to 10. they have great big christmas trees and parties with many people and true holiday spirt. Like you can go to Virginia and go to the shenndoah valley and do many things in a small town

can empathize with you as in a sense feel the same way. starts to early but this is the season to be greedy for the retailers. just suggest you think of your blessings - wife and children, as there are some who envy you. think of " the real reason for the season " and remember both Scrooge and Grinch changed at the very end.

Maybe you should try volunteering at a shelter, then you'll see people who appreciate you. Don't focus on how it makes you feel, but on how you can help someone feel better. You would be amazed at the emotional return you will see and feel when you make another less fortunate person have a better Holiday.

Merry Christmas !!!!!

try reading the bible, and no im not one of those dumb "acting like a salesperson christians" I'm really caring for you and I know it will work, Try reading the Christmas Story in the Bible, but it won't work unless if you really try to learn, cuz after all you can't learn anything if your heart doesnt want to. Ask God for help if you need it. He can help you anytime, adn always has a plan for you. I hope you feel better! :D
