good question. The first thing I would advise you to do is not watch how other skaters skate. A lot of these skaters don't skate correctly. Check with your rink to see if they have a learn to skate for hockey or learn to play hockey. You didn't Say how old you are so if you are in youth hockey, your coach should be showing you the proper stride skating forwards and backwards. One of the answers you got from someone on this question was the push on the back of your skate. That is wrong for hockey skates, but right for in line skates. The push on hockey skates is on the front part of your blade. Remember, your blade has a rocker on the front and back of your blade. Your weight is forward when skating, not backwards. Backwards, you fall down. If you are older, out of high school. then check your rink to see if they have any adult classes for skating skills. It's good to learn the proper way to skate from someone who is certified to teach. Even figure skating teachers can show you the correct way to skate on hockey skates. Good luck.

Hope this helps.

Get out and rollerblade as much as possible during the offseason. The added friction helps strengthen the legs. Also, do lots of squats. I read somewhere that Jaromir Jagr does like 4000 squats a day. Another type of squat other than the basic is a jumping squat. You just jump in the air as you come up from the squat and then back down and repeat. This is also a good cardio workout. Back when Dan Jansen won the gold medal for speed skating they had a small piece with him on television doing that jumping squat. We all know how large and strong those speed skaters thighs are. Of course there are many other ways to improve and I'm sure if you searched through the internet enough you will find tips on this topic. Try not to get discouraged and keep at it. Good Luck........................

Not that you don't already know but I would hit the ice as many times a week as you can, the only way to get better is by doing. Yea sprints and all that will help you out to a certain degree but more so once you are already at a fairly high level. Work on your edges thats really what good skating is all about that and overall balance on your blades, if you can handle those two things skating faster and better should be no problem at all. Good luck and have fun!

Ive been playing hockey for about 3 to 4 years now, and what i learned to be a faster skater is to practice more. I know that is what everyone says but seriously, i used to be not very good at skating but as i practiced and focused on my skating and shooting and moves i improved . i hope this helps! and stick with hockey, its so much fun and helps you with everydays things!

Try not to make noise when your skates hit the ice. I know it sounds weird but grace increaces your turning ability and speed. When you hit the ground with a loud noise that means your causing friction and drag. Go to your ice skating rink and just watch some of the good skaters they are easy to pick out.

wear skates that r 1 size to small. Sounds stupid, but thats how I skated faster and I was in hockey for 11 years. I was the fastest skater on our team.
