A dixie accent is a "southern drawl" ... the words generally sound looong and sloooow, and there are a lot of "aw/ah" sounds ... as though the "edges" and "corners" had been taken off the words. For example, "I declare, Mr. Riley" comes out "Ah, declayah, Mistah Rawley!"

A yankee accent sounds sharp and short. Sorry I can't come up with a definitive example just now.

The midwestern accents are the ones generally used by newscasters in television and radio. They are the most easily understood by everyone.

I wouldn't worry too much, English is the language of the world and the Americans just messed it up with "color" and "aluminum" and stuff like that.
Had they not had a lucky break in the war of independance they would be drinking tea with lemon in, driving on the proper side of the road and going to bed early so they dont miss the morning telly.

From TV over here my understanding is a Dixie is like a hyperactive King Charles spaniel who lives on a sail boat in the missisisisipiiii (is that too many I's?) and runs a floating casino.
And a Yankee drives a mint orange car with a big blue cross on it, gets chased by a daft sherriff every week (at 6pm) and has an awsome sister called Daisy Duke who wears some amazing tight Levis shorts.

That sounds like a good mixture. I took that survey too and it told me I was 52% Dixie. What is weird is I am not from the South and have never lived there or had a close friend from there. And my parents are from Arizona and Minnesota.

I think a yankee refers to someone from the north east coast (new york, etc) and a dixie would probably be someone from the south. So i think your poll is saying you have a slight accent

It refers to the slang & how you pronounce words. Based on how these words are said & spelled in their respective areas.
