A novel is fiction--an imagitive, made-up story.

Biography is about a particular person.

Autobiography is a person writing about himself.

Non-fiction is on different subjects such as Pets.

A book may be any of these.

I believe that a book is used as a general term. It's a physical object, bound, and published literacy. Whereas a novel is an extended fictional work, a story. By this I mean a book can be anything under those terms: phone book, picture book, novel (yes), cook book, etc. A novel is a specific type of book, being fiction, longer than say a short story or children's book, and is usually composed as a tale. (Meaning: a novel is not a how-to book...) :P

not every book is a novel. and i suppose it could be said that only some novels are books. a novel is basically a story written in prose format (as opposed to a ballad, play, screen play, or poem), and of a somewhat extended length (as opposed to an anecdote, short story, or short short). it is typically a work of fiction, but not necessarily. (see the so-called non-fiction novel by truman capote, "in cold blood". or just see the movie "capote")

A book is simply the physical object while a novel describes the content, which would be fiction.
