that the reason for homophobia or hating another culture is because they are afraid of people who are diiferent or things they don't understand? To me in a way that's a cop out. I by far am not a smart person but I'm happy with that, I cant help my kids with alot of their homework because let's face it I'm dumb. But I would never use my stupidity for hating someone or being afraid of someone. Common sense tells me that it's good that people are "different" wouldn't this be a BORING world if we were all the same?

Well said. I think it's more that they are brainwashed by someone (or a religion) telling them it is wrong. It is easier for them to just go along with this than use, and think with their minds and realise the same thing as you or me, that everyone is different. None of us are right or wrong, just different.

I think that you have demonstrated here that you are not as "dumb" as you claim to be. Perhaps you should consider using a more flattering label for yourself, though all labels are limiting.

The sad truth is that intelligence does not guarantee that a person will not also be a bigot, a hatemonger and ultimately a fool. The real requirement in appreciating diversity and accepting others in their difference is tolerance and a non-judgmental attitude. This requires not intelligence but wisdom and experience.

Also to empathize with another human being requires that one first be in touch with their own feelings and emotions. Many of the hatemongers are devoid of all feeling, totally numb. Feeling may have been beaten out of them at an early age. Once gone it's difficult to reclaim.

Basically I think Rodgers and Hammerstein got it right in South Pacific when they had Lt. Cable sing....

"You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!"

You, sir, just weren't taught early enough to hate and now you are condemned to live out your days on earth a man who loves and is loved. Forgive me if I don't express my regrets.

Thats only part of it, not really a big part of it.

First distinguished those who don't like gay people for a variety of reasons, religous, cultural or as you said, distrust of those that are different, from those that are rabidly anti gay, or homophobic. Their opposition to gays is more than personal preference or benign prejudices. They are are consummed by their hate.

Most who are homophobic have serious problems. Some may them selves be closet cases, who lash out at that which they fear they may be, most gay people chanel these thoughts so that they aren't obvious, perhaps they just internalize them.

Most homophobics are not closet gays, but deeply troubled people. They lash out because their own lives are train wrecks. They lash out at easy targets, in this case gays, because they are a minority that is ridiculed by the mainstream. They choose us because they think we are weak and will cave in. This they do to provide cover for their own problems. Often they are burdened with deep psychological issues, emotional upheavals, and above all else the realizations that their lives are out of control and hopeless. In short they are failures who wish to hide their failings by ranting.

Its no surprise they attack gays, we become an easy target as we become more "out" Prior to us, this hatred was focused on etnic and racial minorities. There is little difference between a klan member from 50 years ago and the cyber thug of today (of course no robe is needed on the web). Not surprisingly the actual klan is also a major force in real time hate against gays and lesbians. This is the mind set of the homophobe and hater.

Ever watch these people on tv news as they are in front of cameras and wonder how these people see themself as superior to anyone? They don't actually see themselves that way either, they know they are failures in life, and the hate filled bravado is just a mask. They live with the voice in their head that reminds them they failed at everything in life, so they drown those voices out by shouting, and ranting at others to cover up what a bleak life they have.

Most straight people, even those that don't like gays, would not engage in this kind of behavior. Its not normal, its not sane.
