An Apostille is a standardized form used for the purpose of authenticating or certifying certain documents relating to a variety of legal matters. It is normally used when taking one legal document, such as an adoption order, from one country, say the US or the UK, to another country, say France or Germany.
Generally speaking, once a document has been properly apostilled, the document should be recognised as legal without further evidence in the other country.
One of the Hague Conventions deals with this issue, and only signatory states to the Convention would be bound by it.
